Allegheny Commons Park is Pittsburgh’s oldest municipal park, dating back to 1867, and remains a beloved green refuge in the North Side. Spanning multiple sections—East, West, Center, and North—the park is packed with features that make it perfect for families, active people, and anyone needing a break from the city.
Lake Elizabeth: A Water Spot in the Park
One of the park’s most recognizable features is Lake Elizabeth, a calm body of water set into the East Park section. It’s a serene location for relaxing walks around the edge, watching waterfowl, or taking photos. The lakeshore offers picturesque views of trees and sky that shift beautifully through the seasons.
Courts, Fields, and Open Play Areas
If you like to stay active, Allegheny Commons delivers. There are 2 dedicated pickleball courts in the East section of the park, ideal for both beginners and frequent players.
For basketball fans, the park features “The Jungle” (Arch Street Basketball Court). This full-court space has become a community gathering point. In mid-2024, it was fully renovated—including resurfacing, new backboards, rims, and artistic touches—to preserve its role as a hop-in-anytime spot for pickup games.
Beyond organized courts, the park offers large open lawns and fields that people use for informal games, throw-and-catch, picnics, or flying kites. There’s also a football/soccer field (Richie McCabe Field) that accommodates larger team play.
Tree-Lined Paths for Running, Walking, and Biking
Allegheny Commons has paths shaded by mature trees, stretching across its length. These walkways are ideal for jogging, biking, or easy strolls, especially through the West and Center sections where the tree canopy is thick. The layout gives both direct routes for getting somewhere and winding ways to explore quietly.
The Aviary: Nature Indoors
Inside the park but distinct, the National Aviary offers a very different kind of nature experience. More than 500 birds from over 150 species live in habitats that mimic rainforests, wetlands, and free-flight zones. It’s perfect when you want to combine time outdoors with a chance to get close to birds or learn about wildlife.
Why Allegheny Commons Is Worth a Visit
Residents and visitors love Allegheny Commons because it combines many park functions in one place—quiet nature, active recreation, comfortable paths, open space, and educational opportunities. It works for those who want to sweat (on the courts or run), those who want to relax (by Lake Elizabeth or under trees), and everyone in between.
